Supplying learners with computer access to documents, slide shows and videos while supporting their progression with text chat is no longer enough. It’s time for institutions to start thinking out of the box and evaluate outlets which can help them achieve the most enriched learning experience possible. This assessment should place major emphasis on creative ways to deliver educational material interactively and in some cases, in combination with face to face instruction. Like a finely sharpened sword relegated to dicing tomatoes, online education has been effectively under used and will continue to be until new approaches are taken.

This December the long awaited Summit of the Climate of Copenhagen will take place, in hopes of moving toward a new plan to replace the Kyoto protocol which expires in 2013. 12 years have passed since Kyoto’s global agreement changed our way of life and we’ve only partially fulfilled its intentions and objectives, proving that creating structural changes in global economic activities is a great challenge. Moving forward in that pursuit, the substitution of certain services and the transfer of economic activities to the internet will be more important than ever before. Without a doubt, a good part of the solution to reduce environmental impact happens through intensive use of technology, but much more could be accomplished if emphasis was placed on its utilization globally. For example, studies show that if 20% of the citizens in the European Union used videoconferencing instead of traveling to a designated destination for a meeting, the release of 22 million tons of CO2 would be avoided.

The fact is, normality’s which have persisted until the present time have made environmental initiatives unattainable, and alternatives presented in the form of computer technology must be put to use if we ever hope to enhance our environment.  By utilizing software like Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Virtual Classrooms , we can all benefit from their positive effects both ecologically and economically.

Studies are performed annually in the eLearning sector showing that in large companies’, eLearning has become a major cog of training programs and continues to be applied progressively. However, there are still many companies that have avoided taking the plunge. A major reason for this is the relative lack of maturity in certain markets. In those sectors, companies base their training initiatives on cost savings and not on the competitive advantages that can be accrued over time – a short sighted perspective to say the least.

Implementing online training is fairly simple if approached properly. The key is developing a concrete plan. One that assesses the technical means available or required, and devotes time to developing new methodologies, indicating what changes will be made to the current training system.  Furthermore, companies should detail these prospective investments, marking targets for the short, medium and long term as well as assessing the costs, return on investment and satisfaction of employees along the way. After completing this analysis, a company should be prepared to implement its e-learning training model, taking into account a couple of key elements, as stated in studies conducted by auditors from the prestigious Price Waterhouse:

•  Customization and Content: Content is  available  through catalogs of online courses, but it can also be originated by the organization with use of preexisting materials. This is why it is important to have a tool for creating courses. It allows for the adaptation of company specific information.

• Tools and Pliability: It is essential to have  tools which will allow you to work with multiple formats, including images, videos, etc. This is important when it comes to adding depth to your training program.

• Platform Selection: Choosing the right Learning Management System (LMS) is of the utmost importance. Deciding on a platform can make or break the synergy of your business or institution. That is why proper analysis is a must. A good LMS should be adaptable, easy to use and extensively scalable. It’s critical to have a capacity for integration that is standardized, allowing for the smooth exchange of content developed on other platforms. It’s also imperative that the platform define user roles, controlling and customizing access privileges and other vital functions.

If emphasis is placed on these recommendations, any business that desires to incorporate eLearning into its organizational training will manage to do so with minimal risks and prosper from the competitive advantages it can offer.

According to a meta-analysis released in June 2009 by the ED, online training has distinct and definite advantages over face-to face instruction when it comes to teaching and learning in higher education. The US Education Department examined all types of instruction and found that positive results appeared consistent for all types of higher education across a wide range of disciplines. The department also noted that this meta-analysis differs from earlier studies which generally found that online education and face-to-face teaching were similarly effective on issues of learning.

The report attributes much of online learning’s success (blended or entirely) to time factors, which allow students to go at their own pace instead of a predetermined set time for a classroom group. The report went on to say: “Studies in which learners in the online condition spent more time on tasks than students in the face-to-face condition found a greater benefit for online learning” (xv). This might seem to be an obvious conclusion, but a great deal of importance must be placed on the way online learning  allows the learner flexibility. In short, students respond positively when they are allowed to spend more time going over certain data and less time on other material at their own discretion.

Another pattern the analysis revealed was that video and quizzes in online learning did not appear to increase learning effectiveness, yet, interactive media which placed students in the driver seat did. The study went on to say: “Online learning can be enhanced by giving learners control of their interactions with media and prompting learner reflection.” (xvi) This places a premium value on software that utilizes multimedia to engage students and tests their knowledge retention interactively.

Although much of this surveys results are directed toward higher learning, the valuable variable that provides insight for business owners is the student’s level of education. These findings coupled with the time and travel benefits derived of instituting elearning translates into enormous cost savings and more effective training for companies, something business owners can hardly afford to overlook.
